What Can and Can’t Go in a Roll-Off Dumpster?
Renting a dumpster makes cleanup easy — but a few items are not allowed for safety and environmental reasons, and tossing them in can mean extra fees or a refused load. Here’s the simple version.
✅ What you CAN throw in
- Household junk, furniture, and mattresses
- Renovation debris — drywall, wood, cabinets, flooring, tile
- Roofing shingles (mind the weight limit)
- Yard waste, branches, and lumber
- Concrete, brick, and dirt (usually in a dedicated heavy-debris container)
- Most non-hazardous construction and demolition material
❌ What you CANNOT throw in
These are commonly prohibited and typically need special disposal:
- Hazardous waste — chemicals, solvents, pesticides, motor oil
- Wet paint (dried-out cans are sometimes OK — ask first)
- Tires
- Appliances with Freon — refrigerators, freezers, AC units (unless the Freon is removed)
- Batteries — car and lithium batteries
- Electronics in some areas (e-waste rules)
- Asbestos and other regulated materials
- Flammable or explosive items, propane tanks
- Medical or biohazard waste
When you’re not sure — just ask
Rules vary a little by hauler and disposal facility. Before you toss a questionable item, call and ask — it’s faster than dealing with a refused load or a surprise fee.
